Meet Our Instructors
Chuck Coburn
Chief Instructor & Director 7th Dan
Mr. Chuck Coburn is a JKA 7th degree black belt and a certified instructor/examiner and judge with the JKA•WF AMERICA. Mr. Coburn began his formal training in 1969 under Master Shojiro Koyama. He has also trained extensively with some of the world’s most renowned instructors, i.e. Masters Ueki, Nakayama, Okazaki, Yaguchi, and Nishiyama.
He won numerous awards over a 25 year competition career including representing the US in international competition numerous times. Sensei Coburn has been teaching for over 51+ years including as an instructor at Mesa College for over 25 years.
Mr. Chuck Coburn was one of the initial members to inducted into the Arizona Budo Preservation and his Sensei Shojiro Koyama in 2015. In 2019 Coburn Sensei's wife was inducted as one of two women. Both the Coburns are one of the few members still teaching full time. In order to be eligible, you must be over 60 years of age and have over 40 years of martial arts experience.
Cheryl Coburn
Instructor & Manager 6th Dan
Mrs. Cheryl Coburn 6th degree black belt and certified instructor/examiner and judge. She has been training and teaching for over 46+ years. She has had an outstanding competition career including on numerous US teams for international competiton.
During her competition career she was a top national competitor in Kumite and Kata. She was an ISKF US team member for Pan American Championships and the JKA/ISKF World Shoto Cup; Second place at the ISKF Nationals in kumite 1992; Western States Kumite Champion in 1992; and Kata Champion 1989 and 1993.
Julian Fisher
Instructor - 4th Dan
Mr. Julian Fisher is a 4th degree belt and a certified JKA instructor, judge and examiner. He has been training and teaching for over 36 plus years.
